California SB 50

California Senate Bill 50 is worse than your April 11 article reported. It would authorize developers to build 4-8 story condos and apartments not only near "transit" (such as a frequent bus stop that can be added as the development spreads), but also in a "jobs-rich" area to be later determined by a state agency. In other words, these residential highrises could be imposed most everywhere there is already some development. And the legislation would also bar cities and counties from even requiring more than .5 onsite parking spots per housing unit. New residents would need to line the streets with their vehicles.

SB 50 is a land and power grab by wealthy developers and is being pushed by even richer corporate executives who want more and cheaper housing for millions of new employees they have hired and are still importing to California. The only way to stop SB 50 may be an immediate statewide referendum petition challenging its enactment and a statewide initiative constitutional amendment giving cities and counties some say over local land use the state could not disregard. (See California Constitution, Article 2, sections 8 and 9 regarding those powers).
