When I first saw the magazine headline, Merlot has Endured the Slurs And is Coming Back, I was in agreement, and excited that a red varietal that grows really well here was being written about, but the article disappointed. I am sure Mr. Stoll enjoys a nice glass of merlot on occasion, but repeating the Hollywood slurs, and intimating that even a local winemaker has nothing good to say about this varietal, is not helping. Wouldn’t it be a good idea to get a quote from that winemaker, rather than to guess his disposition or intention drawn by personal observation at a public event years prior?

If you are going to write about merlot, and its comeback, one might mention the esteem this grape continues to hold in Bordeaux, as a member of the strictly limited five varietals that make what could arguably be the most famous red blend in the wine world.
