Dear Marc and Lynne Benioff: Thank you very much for your $30 million contribution to establish the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Benioff Homeless and Housing Initiative. Understanding homelessness is of prime importance in a state where around 130,000 are homeless according to the 2018 Point-In-Time Count of the 2017 homeless, and another 130,000 primary and secondary students are homeless on any given day. As Chief Executive Officer of San Francisco’s largest employer, Salesforce, Incorporated, Mr. Benioff, you and your wife’s contribution demonstrates a great deed in socioeconomic justice and socioeconomic responsibility.

You all are also no doubt aware that the Bay Area has the second highest amount of unsheltered homeless of any metropolitan area in the United States after Los Angeles. It is wise to put Dr. Margot Kushel, M.D., who is head of UCSF Center for Vulnerable Populations and a professor of medicine there, in charge of the initiative; however, when Dr. Kushel states: “There is no medicine as powerful as housing. But the problem is complex,” she is incorrect.
