The Pleasanton Library is seeking volunteer tutors for its adult literacy program, Pleasanton Reads.
Tutors will lead a variety of activities to help develop fundamental reading, writing, and conversation skills, including one-on-one lessons, small group conversation practice, citizenship test preparation, and book clubs.
The library will provide training and orientation, ongoing support, and all books and materials. The next training session will be from 1-4 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Pleasanton Senior Center, 5353 Sunol Blvd. New volunteers are required to attend training, although no advance preparation or prior teaching experience is required.
More than 130 volunteers provide English as a Second Language (ESL) and other literacy services to 200 adult students throughout the Tri-Valley communities. Despite this broad reach, Pleasanton Reads has a waiting list of more than 100 students who would like to work with a tutor. Volunteers need to be 18 or older, fluent in American English, familiar with American culture, and able to devote 1-2 hours weekly for at least six months.
For more information or to register for the workshop, go to www.volunteermatch.org or contact the Pleasanton Reads Team at (925) 931-3405.
