Detlev Hanschke, left, with his son and grandchildren.

As part of their Twilight Tasting series of benefits for worthy causes, Page Mill Winery has agreed to host a fundraiser for Livermore mechanic, Detlev Hanschke, who is battling a rare form of cancer. The fundraiser will be held on Thursday, February 28, from 4:30 to 8pm, at the Winery. All tasting fees that evening will be donated to Detlev’s fundraising efforts, along with 10% of all wine sales. Additionally, vendors including Love Me Apparel Boutique, Pampered Chef and India Hicks will be offering to donate a portion of their sales.

Please gather your friends and come on out to enjoy some great wine, meet Detlev (he plans to come with some of his family) and the vendors.

Hanschke’s shop, International Auto Service, is widely known throughout the throngs of foreign car owners in the region, especially those who love Volkswagens. But he’s rescued many a BMW, Volvo and Mercedes owner, too. Now he needs help to fight a disease for which all his mechanical training in Germany is no match.

Bonnie Bartlett of Charles R takes her Mercedes to Detlev’s shop, and swears she wouldn’t go anywhere else. Charles R held a fundraiser for him this past Presidents Day weekend, in concert with their wine club release. They are planning to coordinate another fundraiser in April, along with 3 Steves and Rodrigue Molyneaux, April 13 & 14.

Detlev’s son, Kevin, is the GM of the Porsche dealership in Livermore. He will be at the February 28th event at Page Mill. If you can’t make it, consider donating to Detlev’s Gofundme page: www.gofundme.com/donate4detlev.

Winery Tasting Room Sales and Service Program to Begin March 2

The first in a series of classes aimed at teaching the basics of tasting room management, etiquette and operations will be held at Rodrigue Molyneaux winery on Saturday, March 2nd, 8:30—11:30AM.

Nancy Rodrigue, board member of Friends of Open Space & Vineyards (FOV) and co-owner of Rodrigue Molyneaux Winery, worked with Las Positas College to establish the series, called Winery Tasting Room Sales and Service, as part of the Community Education program. Its goal is to provide a baseline of instruction for wine tasting room staff in the Livermore Valley.

“This program is also relevant for tasting room staff already employed with a winery but who want more knowledge about wine, and would like to improve their tasting room skills. The purpose is to enhance the Livermore wine Country experience for visitors to the Livermore Valley,” explains Rodrigue.

She worked with David Everett, Program Coordinator/Faculty for Viticulture, Enology and Winery Technology and Horticulture at Las Positas College, along with Don Milanese, Vice President Emeritus (and also a founding administrator) of Las Positas College and Treasurer of FOV, to create the training program which begins March 2, 2019. Although part of the LPC Community Education program, it is funded entirely by FOV.

The second class will be held on March 9th at Cedar Mountain, also from 8:30-11:30AM. The third class is scheduled for March 16, and will be held at Ruby Hill. The fourth class is set for March 23 at Darcie Kent. All classes are three hours, and run from 8:30-11:30AM.

David Everett, who runs the Enology and Winery Technology programs at Las Positas, says, “This series is a collaborative effort between Friends of Open Space & Vineyards, and Las Positas College. This is a wonderful introduction to the College's Wine Hospitality program. Las Positas College offers Degrees, Certificates and transfer in Viticulture, Enology, and Wine Hospitality.”
