Las Positas College Theater Arts will hold open auditions for a performance of Disney's “Newsies: The Musical” on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21-22, at the college’s Mertes Center for the Arts, 3000 Campus Hill Drive, Livermore. The Tony Award-winning musical will be presented in the outdoor amphitheater in July.

Dance auditions will be held from 7-8:30 p.m., or 8:30-10 p.m., on Feb. 21. from 7-8:30 p.m. or 8:30-10:00 p.m. General auditions will be held from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., on Feb. 22. Callbacks will be by invitation only from 1-4 p.m., on Sunday, Feb. 23.

Those interested in the general audition should prepare 16-32 measures of music, in their key, not from the show. Accompaniment will be provided. They may also share a one-minute monologue, if memorized.

Those who are unable to make it to the dance call or general audition, may submit a headshot, resume, and taped audition no later than Tuesday, Feb. 18. Taped auditions must include no more than 30 seconds of a dance reel and 16-32 measures of a song. A monologue is also encouraged. Set in New York City at the turn of the century, "Newsies" is inspired by the real-life "Newsboy Strike of 1899," when newsboys led a band of orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week-long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers in a fight for fair wages.

Aspiring Newsies who want to join the picket line, including those interested in the roles of Katherine and Jack, should attend the dance call on Feb. 21. They should bring jazz shoes and tap shoes, if applicable, as well as appropriate clothing for leaping and turning. Those cast as Newsies will have an opportunity to take six boot-camp classes in preparation for rehearsals, provided at no cost by the Theater Arts Department.

Rehearsals will be held Monday – Thursday, June 1- July 16, from 7-10 p.m. Performances will be held Friday and Saturday, July 17-25, with the possibility of a show added on Thursday, July 23.
