New Website Explains Renters Rights

The Sacramento-based association said the moratorium was adopted to help renters who were financially affected by the pandemic, but it failed to include any eligibility requirements or proof of COVID-19 impacts.  

As a result, according to the association, many renters with the ability to pay their rent refused to do so for months, and even years, “putting significant strain on housing providers who are demanding the county help them recover the losses they’ve suffered.” 

 Meanwhile, proponents of stricter housing regulations worry that lifting the moratorium will leave renters without any rights or protections. 

 “It is completely misleading to say that renters don’t have any rights when California and many cities in Alameda County have some of the strongest renter protections in the country,” said CAA Executive Vice President Joshua Howard.“This is irresponsible fearmongering on the part of some unscrupulous advocacy groups, whose job it is to provide factual information to tenants about their rights. 

Howard said the goal in launching the website was “to ensure that all renters in Alameda County are aware of the many laws that protect them, including the California Tenant Protection Act of 2019, which has been heralded as the nation’s strongest statewide tenant protection law.”
