Alameda County property owners who are unable to pay their taxes by the April 10 deadline because of the coronavirus epidemic may ask to have late penalties waived on a case-by-case basis, according to Treasurer-Tax Collector Henry Levy.

The delinquent date for failing to pay county property taxes remains April 10, Levy said. But his office will consider cancelling late fees for taxpayers who can show a hardship because of the epidemic. Taxpayers must request a penalty cancellation form from the Treasurer-Tax Collector office. Forms will be available after April 10.

Levy said valid reasons to seek cancellation of a late-payment penalty may include illness, recent unemployment or under-employment, and business losses specific to the coronavirus epidemic, which must be documented. He said homeowners, small businesses, and small landlords are eligible, and that his office will attempt to respond to all requests within 60 days.
