“I was taught that a community is only as good as it treats its most vulnerable citizens. I was alarmed that a crucial program would be discontinued due to a lack of funding”, observed Jeff Katz, personally involved with helping senior citizens through the Senior Support Program of the Tri-Valley (SSPTV). SSPTV is a non-profit agency serving low-income seniors 60 years and older, who reside in Pleasanton, Livermore, Dublin and Sunol, providing services that will foster independence and promote the safety and well-being of seniors.
The SOAR program is in trouble. Katz continues, “When the staff at SSPTV told me that funding for SOAR has run out and the last lunch would be December 13, I asked what it costs to fund the program that includes a once a month lunch and social. We live in a wealthy community and it's unacceptable that twelve days before Christmas, the staff may have to tell their seniors that the program will end… we can't let this happen.”
This holiday season, SSPTV is asking donations of $100K to fund the SOAR program for the next two years, including expanding to twice monthly lunches. SOAR combines recreational, therapeutic, and educational activities to inspire seniors to re-engage in their community. Seniors learn about nutrition, medication management, healthy lifestyle choices, stress management, and connecting with others. Without help, there will no longer be a SOAR program.
As a program beneficiary noted, “I felt so isolated and depressed before the program, and now I have this wonderful group who has gone through similar experiences: SOAR has changed my life.”
