On Thurs., Dec. 6, Future Forum announced the election of a new leadership team for the 116th Congress. The group, founded in 2015 by Rep. Eric Swalwell (CA-15), brings together the youngest Democratic members of the House of Representatives to focus attention on issues and opportunities that will help promise younger generations a successful future.
Future Forum unanimously elected Rep. Stephanie Murphy (FL-07) to serve her first term as Chair, and Rep. Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) and Rep-Elects Antonio Delgado (NY-22) and Abby Finkenauer (IA-01) to serve as Vice-Chairs. Rep. Eric Swalwell, founder and two-term chair of Future Forum, will become Chair Emeritus.
“Future Forum has achieved a lot over the past four years — we’ve visited nearly 50 cities, met with thousands of young people, and expanded our membership to 50 Members of Congress,” said Swalwell. “I’m looking forward to working with our new leadership team to continue our mission of bringing young people to the table to work collaboratively and create a brighter, more equal future for us all.”
“As we saw in Florida after the Parkland shooting, young Americans are demanding their voices be heard now more than ever – and Congress should listen,” said Murphy. “I’m proud to lead this group of passionate young leaders in Congress who will amplify the voices of younger Americans and provide them with a platform to shape the future of our great country. With millennials making up the largest generation in the American workforce and post-millennials becoming more engaged in our democracy, Future Forum will have an important role in this new Democratic majority to steer our country in the right direction. I’m grateful to Congressman Swalwell for creating Future Forum and working so effectively to build it from the ground up.”
“As the new Vice-Chair of Future Forum, I’ll be working with my colleagues to address the distinctive challenges young people face, empowering them to transform our country in the fight for justice, human rights, affordable education, and economic opportunity for all,” said Gomez. “Together, with Chair Stephanie Murphy, and Vice-Chairs Antonio Delgado and Abby Finkenauer, we can help amplify the voices of young Americans and ensure they have a substantive role to play in charting a prosperous and equitable course for our nation.”
"I'm excited to serve as a Vice-Chair of Future Forum and intend to focus on issues most important to young people, like loan forgiveness so they can pursue opportunities without burdensome student debt and helping our young farmers access land and capital," said Delgado. "I will also use this role to facilitate conversations with young Americans and make sure their voices are heard by the people elected to represent them."
“I’m honored to represent the Midwest as Vice-Chair of Future Forum to further conversations about how Congress can do a better job making sure all Americans, regardless of where they live, have access to the American dream that has been slipping away for so many,” said Finkenauer. “I’m excited for the work ahead bringing hope and opportunities for growth across generations.”
Future Forum leads a national listening tour to engage with young Americans where they live, work, and go to school. Since its inception, Future Forum has visited 47 cities and met with thousands of young people. Members of the group have introduced legislation to address college affordability, student loan debt, and entrepreneurship, often inspired by ideas generated through listening sessions.
