This year Livermore Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and American Legion (AL) are planning a series of joint ceremonies at the three cemeteries in Livermore for Memorial Day.
On Saturday, May 25, of the Memorial Day weekend, the AL will partner with local Boy Scout Troop 931 to put out over 1,400 flags on the veteran graves in these three cemeteries.
On Monday 27 May, Memorial Day, ceremonies start at 9 a.m. at the Roselawn Cemetery 1240 N. Livermore with the traditional raising of the flag to half-staff and Boy Scout Troops 924 and 975 flag ceremonies along with the VFW Honor Guard. Gina Collinsworth will sing several patriotic songs during the event. The ceremony continues with speeches by Mayor John Marchand, Sgt. Major Jason Johnson from Camp Parks Reserve Training Center and Congressmen Swalwell’s office. Wreath presentations will be done by the VFW, AL, Blue Star Moms and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
The ceremony then proceeds to East Avenue at St. Michael’s Cemetery at 11 a.m. and then to Memory Gardens Cemetery at 11:30 to honor all those veterans laid to rest in these locations.
Following the ceremonies, all participants can proceed to the Veterans Hall on the corner of 5th and L Street for light snacks and a social gathering at noon. At 1 p.m., the local chapter of the Quilts of Valor will conduct a Quilt presentation to deserving veterans. The public is cordially invited to attend any or all of the ceremonies.
The Veterans Organizations of Pleasanton will present the celebrations for Memorial Day, scheduled for Monday, May 27th. Patriotic music will precede the ceremony at 10:30, performed by the Pleasanton Community Band with Bob Williams conducting. The ceremony will begin at 11:00.
The ceremony will be held on the south lawn of the Pleasanton Senior Center, 5353 Sunol Blvd., Pleasanton. Included in the program is the Veterans Organizations of Pleasanton Color Guard, presentations by members of our Military Community supported by the Scout troops and Sea Cadets, culminating with the Reading of Honor Roll of Silence.
The ceremony will also feature Three-Round Volley with the playing of Taps. The Laying of the Wreath will be joined with a bagpipe rendition of Amazing Grace. The ceremony will last approximately 90 minutes.
The 2019 Memorial Day ceremony will be hosted by American Legion Post 237 Pleasanton.
As a Veterans Service Organization, American Legion Post 237 is a social organization comprised of Veterans having served during recognized times of conflict, coming together in friendship and camaraderie. Dedicated to the mutual helpfulness of fellow Veterans in need, the group also supports active-duty Servicemembers, sponsors youth programs, and participation in American civic responsibilities.
