Rep. Eric Swalwell, (D-Castro Valley, a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and of the House Committee on the Judiciary, issued the following statement on Dec. 3 following the release of the House Democrats’ 300-page impeachment report.
The report asserts that President Trump abused his power by trying to enlist Ukraine to help him in the 2020 presidential election, placing his own personal and political interests “above the national interests of the United States.”
“The Intelligence Committee report sums up what the entire nation saw in live testimony: Donald J. Trump abused the power of the presidency and your taxpayer dollars — $391 million in military aid — to pressure a desperate ally to manufacture dirt on his political opponent,” Swalwell stated.
“He put his own interests above our national security, and has obstructed efforts to expose this by ignoring lawful subpoenas and preventing certain witnesses from testifying,” the statement continued. “There has been no plausible defense; assessing what happened here is a matter of plain facts and common sense. As a former prosecutor, this might be one of the clearest-cut cases I’ve ever seen.”
Swalwell sits on the House Judiciary Committee, which now is tasked with determining whether to recommend Trump’s impeachment and removal from office.
